Anyone that knows me is aware of my obsession with clothes, especially T Shirts, particularly from independent clothing lines, and I’m always on the lookout for new ones.
When I saw the nautical, tattoo inspired designs from Stay Lucky Clothing I was sold instantly and placed an order, It arrived with complete with handwritten note and a Christmas present! Now that is how you do it!
The current range includes bold printed images, a logo collection, some embroided logo T’s and sweats, beanie’s and a brand new hooded top, all printed on top quality garments.
I took the opportunity to speak to the guys behind Stay Lucky for your reading pleasure.
Can you please Introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello! We’re Tom and David, and we own and run Stay Lucky Clothing.
How did Stay Lucky come about?
The initial idea came about over a romantic pub lunch together. We discussed artistic direction, potential brand names and how hungover we were.
What have you got going on at the moment?
We’re currently working on new designs for Spring/Summer and making plans to appear at fashion shows and tattoo conventions up and down the country, so keep your eyes peeled!
You have a very personal touch, putting in handwritten notes, presents etc with every order, how important is that to you?
Incredibly important. I insisted on this from day one, and it will continue until the day it’s physically impossible for us to write the notes out ourselves. As for the presents, we figure that an unexpected surprise – no matter how small – has the power to make someone’s day. We love receiving tweets from people who say we’ve done exactly that.
What is your main vision for Stay Lucky?
To be honest, there is no grand plan. We just want to make clothing that people love. For me, the greatest satisfaction I could possibly receive from Stay Lucky is walking down the street and seeing people wearing something I’ve designed.
What do you think is the most important thing to you in running Stay Lucky?
From day one we said we’d never release a product that we wouldn’t wear ourselves. That’s very important to us. But, please, if we ever release a range of dresses or ladies underwear, don’t hold us to this.
What advice would you give someone who was thinking about starting up a clothing line?
Don’t do it if you’re not willing to put the hours in and work hard. People seem to think it’s easy, but there’s a lot of stressful days, long nights and sacrifices you’ll need to make. We ran into a technical issue 24 hours before our launch, and we had to work for 18 straight hours to fix it on time. If you’re willing to give it your all, go for it!
Whats the hardest thing about running a clothing line?
The hardest part of running a clothing line is basically the same as above – stressful days and long nights. Coming up to launch days there’s been a few times when I’ve literally forgotten what day it is because it messes with your sleeping pattern up so bad.
What is your inspiration for Stay Lucky?
We decided we wanted to stick to our harbour-town roots and design clothing with nautical themes, but also incorporate elements of tattoo art as we’re both big tattoo lovers. We decided to use the name ‘Stay Lucky’ because it was once used as a good luck message to sailors about to set off on long voyages, but it’s also a popular tagline on tattoos. It’s the perfect fit.
Do you have any famous fans?
Our clothes are currently worn by members of A Rocket to the Moon and Blitz Kids, which is incredibly satisfying for us as we’re big fans of both bands.
What’s your favourite music?
We both have an extremely diverse taste in music. If you had to push us for a favourite genre, it’d have to be something in the direction of rock, pop-punk or metal. This is too difficult. Next question, please.
Do you think music and fashion go hand in hand?
Absolutely. Both music and fashion are outlets for creative expression, so they definitely go hand in hand.
