Blast From The Past: Funeral For A Friend – Hours

Funeral For A Friend are about to embark on a couple of dates at the end of the month in which they’ll be playing their album Hours in full. We’ll be there for the Cardiff date – so naturally what better reason is there for us to take a look back at the band’s brilliant second album?

Hours Funeral For A FriendIt’s hard to believe that it’s been about nine years since Funeral For A Friend’s second album Hours came out, as it’s quite simply an album that just doesn’t seem to get old no matter how much you listen to it because it features some of the strongest songs of their career to date.

Sure, the crowd favourites like Streetcar are good, solid songs but the real highlights of the album are two tracks that rarely get a look-in (if at all) in a live environment.

Monsters sits right in the middle of the album and is a beautifully heavy number, with a chorus so massive you’ll find yourself singing along to at the top of your voice before you can stop yourself. There’s a wonderful thick tone to the guitars and this song truly is Funeral For A Friend at their best.

However, the highlight of the album is the quietly stunning closer, Sonny. Entirely different to anything the band have ever done, both prior and subsequent to Hours, they took a risk with this acoustic/electronic track (for example, it features a drum machine rather than an actual kit!) and it absolutely paid off as it’s a breathtaking song. It shows another versatile side to the band and features looping ideas accompanied with beautiful lyrics and heartfelt vocals.

Forget Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation – if you’re looking for the ‘essential’ Funeral For A Friend album then Hours is what you really need!
