Interview With Wrong

A short while ago, we took a look at Wrong’s latest offering Pessimistic Outcomes (you can see what we thought of it it in a little more detail here). Eager to learn more, we caught up with the band for a chat.

Thanks for the interview! Could you introduce yourself and tell me a little about the band?
We are Wrong, a Spanish black metal band, formed by Phlegeton (Wormed) and DP Rey (ex-The YTriple Corporation). We released our first album Memories of Sorrow in 2013, through Aphelion Productions and we just released a new album Pessimistic Outcomes through Xtreem Music. Some time ago we decided to compose black metal music in order to express ideas and concepts that couldn’t be expressed in other projects. We try to make compositions and a production slightly different from true black metal. The lyrics aren’t blasphemous but tells stories of human decay in a fictitious future. Despite being only two members, we perform live with session musicians. They are Guillemoth – bass (Wormed), Setesh – guitar (Kanesh) and Gabriel – drums (Infected Plague).

You recently released your new album Pessimistic Outcomes – could you tell me about the writing and recording process of it?
Pessimistic Outcomes was recorded from February 2013 to January 2014. Normally the songwriting process begins with the strings. We create complete structures and get a first overview of the songs. Once we have a clear structure, we compose piano bass and drums. The lyrics are written throughout the entire composition process or even before make the music and then it is adapted to the instrumentation more suitable. For definitive recordings, we use our own studio equipment. The mixing and mastering is usually supervised by both.

Were there any tracks that were more of a challenge to complete than others?
Not particularly. We like to compose music that flowing properly without alarums and excursions. It is important for us that the music breathe in order to cause the hypnotic effect that produces the final result.

My personal favourite is His Hatred Breathes. Could you tell me a little more about that track?
His Hatred Breathes was written from an original idea of Phlegeton and adapted by DP. We love the end result of the song too. This time is not a concrete history. It’s an overview from somebody living the horror of that reality: mountains of dead bodies stacked by cannibal clans that deify the death, desolation, death everywhere…

Which track is your favourite or the one you’re most proud of?
One of the songs that we like is the previously mentioned His Hatred Breathes. We really like it as well, the final song I thought I’d woken because of its funeral ambience, the dynamism of Dragging My Soul Until The Sunset… but surely the song that we love to play as a band is Pessimistic Outcomes. It was the one that we chose to name the album, single and debut video. We have been playing that song from sometime ago at rehearsal and shows.

Are there any interesting stories from the studio?
Possibly the most remarkable is the evolution of the string section along the LPs. Memories of Sorrow was recorded tuned in C. Pessimistic Outcomes was recorded in B. We are writing a new album in A. Each time the songs sound lower. It seems that we move towards to an infernal catacomb. If this trend continues, within a couple of years, will we be using ten-string guitars?

Another interesting story comes from the recording of the first album. In the vocals recording season, Crypta, Phlegeton’s kitty, recorded her voice in the song Now I Remember. It can be heard clearly in the fast middle part of the song, after the pause.

If Wrong could collaborate with any band, who would you chose?
Surely would collaborate in a Darkthrone live…seriously. We like to play or collaborate with any of the greats: Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon, Shining, etc..

If you could have a band cover one of your songs, what would it be?
Now I remember from Memories of Sorrow can be covered for most styles of extreme metal. It would be interesting to hear a thrash or death metal version of that song.

And finally – if Wrong could put their name to a product, what would it be?
Wrong pencils and notebooks.
Wrong ropes.
Axes and chainsaws Wrong.
…. whatever.
