Interview With This Burning City

This Burning City

We recently caught up with This Burning City for a quick chat, ahead of them entering the studio to record an EP. See what happened below.

Can you introduce yourself and tell me a little about the band?
This Burning City is a Hardcore band from the small town of Gananoque, Ontario over in Canada. We’ve been together for roughly 3 years. We’ve opened for many great acts such as Norma Jean, Ritual, Sleep When You’re Dead and Barrier.

How did you get started?
Well, most of us – Steve (vocals), Jacob (guitar), Mitch (guitar)and Jarrett (drums) – knew each other in grade school. After jamming with eachother a bunch, we decided to get a band together. It’s had its ups and downs but we’ve stayed pretty strong. We picked up Nick (bass) a couple years later. We’ve been going at it hard since.

You released your new single Ignorance a few months back – what made you choose that as a single?
It was pretty unanimous for Ignorance to be our single. At the time of recording, we all agreed to get Ignorance done and release it as something for people to sink their teeth into while we finished the rest of the EP. It represented our sound the best, as well as had some cool little parts that we thought people would appreciate.

You’re also getting ready to hit the studio – would you say Ignorance is a good indication of what fans can expect from the rest of the release?
Ignorance is a pretty decent representation. But with that, I would like to also say that the stuff we’ve been putting together is going to blow some minds. We’re extremely proud of our work and can’t wait to share it with all of the world. Our only concern is the fact that we’re switching studios. It could definitely cause some unfortunate difference in sound from the single.

Moving onto live performances, how would you describe your show to someone who hasn’t seen you live yet?
It’s energy and excitement in its rawest form. We’re talking old school The Chariot style excitement with the jumping, dancing and flying instruments. We give out energy in hopes that people will give us the same kind of energy. But a warning: Try not to get hit in the head with a bass guitar.

What would you say the best show you’ve ever played has been?
Probably playing with Ritual would be our favourite. Matt Tobin is a huge idol of ours, as well as our reason for getting into music. Other than the absolute fan girl moments we had, it was a blast and all of them were really great guys.

If you could get any artist to cover one of your songs, who would you choose and why?
Again, Matt Tobin of Ritual. We’re going to sound pretty creepy constantly throwing his name around in interviews though haha. Maybe one day he’ll consider covering one of ours songs. But he’s a super talented individual with an extremely awesome dynamic of vocal skills.

And if This Burning City could put their name to a product, what would it be?
Condoms. Would love to see someone whipping out a condom with the words “This Burning City” on it. Probably the definition of cock-block but would be absolutely worth it.
