Editor’s Playlist – 23 February 2015

It’s Monday morning…so it’s officially time to kick start your week with a brand new playlist and as always, it’s full of some absolute corkers! So sit back, make sure your speakers are turned up to the max and give the tracks a listen – either by clicking below, or listening via our last.fm page.

Moonspell – Breathe (Until We Are No More)
Moonspell are currently getting ready to release their awesome new album Extinct and have recently released a lyric video for the opening track, the very stunning Breathe (Until We Are No More). The track as a whole is a great insight into what you can expect from the whole album and it really kickstarts the release into life – it’s one of those songs that gets stuck in your head before you even realise, and you’ll find yourself humming along to it for days.

Omnium Gatherum – The Unknowing
Perhaps the best way to describe such a band as Omnium Gatherum is atmospherically stunning, and having recently seen them live in Liverpool (our review can be read here), it has to be said that they’re just as atmospheric onstage as they are off. The Unknowing is perhaps one of the band’s strongest songs, so it’s no wonder they released it as a single. With lush instrumentation and momentum-filled harsh vocals atop of the music, it’s a track that will stick in your mind for all the right reasons – indeed, I recently saw it described as a “beautiful-sounding death metal song” and quite honestly, I’m inclined to completely agree.

The Howl Ensemble – Gunslinger
We recently introduced you to The Howl Ensemble ahead of their UK dates and we just haven’t been able to stop listening to their debut album Prooi. Gunslinger is the strongest of the bunch and it’s a song that will get your foot tapping along in no time and it has this great “squealing” guitar tone that sets the track apart from the crowd. Give it a listen and let us know what you think!

Hearts Under Fire – False Hope
You really can’t go wrong with a nice little slab of melodic rock every once in a while and False Hope definitely ticks all the boxes in that respect. The lovely ladies of Hearts Under Fire recently gave us a track-by-track insight on the album this song features on (see it here) and is described as deliberately wanting the listener to feel uneasy. I’m not quite sure if it invokes that reaction with me personally, but it’s still my favourite on Outlines and the passion in the vocals is especially nice; it’s just easy on the ears with its light and airy sound.

Kuolemanlaakso – Musta
Yeah, I know I included this band in my playlist from two weeks ago but I don’t care; I’m the editor and I have the final say. 😉 Whilst in Kuopio, I met up with the band’s guitarist/keyboardist/lyricist Markus and I got the chance to see the actual tree that features in the song. Cool, to say the least – it added so much more to an already-awesome song. The song itself is a rather magnificent piece, opening with rather simplistic acoustic guitars before the full band kicks in and hits you like a tonne of bricks. The drums on this one are particularly impressive; the double-kick and energy in the verses contrasts well with the slower-paced chorus and it’s worth taking a closer look because there’s all sorts of great little complex bits that you may miss if you’re not paying full attention. In fact, the song as a whole is just tremendous and definitely worth more than a simple passing glance.
