Christgrinder – Whence Cometh Evil? Review

cover2There’s been some great black metal coming out of the UK recently and Christgrinder is no exception to this – they’re just about to drop their brand new album Whence Cometh Evil? and it’s an absolutely magnificent offering; a gripping listen that sucks you in and demands your attention from start to finish.

Whence Cometh Evil? has a very traditional feel to it, yet it also feels very crisp and fresh, with Christgrinder paying homage to black metal bands of yesteryear whilst also forging their own unique path – and that’s one of the things that makes the album so great because it really highlights the band’s versatility.

There’s fast and energetic moments with songs such as Necrodegenerate Phallus Envenomation and title track Whence Cometh Evil? that will get your foot tapping and your head banging, and it also gets more atmospheric for Things That Walk Which Ought To Crawl with a nice bit of ambience surrounding the crushing heaviness. There’s even a more avant-garde number, The Black Adhan, which features clean female vocals and a purely melodic approach, and it somehow just works.

Quite simply, Whence Cometh Evil? is an album you won’t want to miss – it’s an accessible release and it could well propel the band into becoming one of the big names in the black metal scene.
