Nekrogoblikon’s Playlist

Nekrogoblikon

Nekrogoblikon recently released their excellent third album Heavy Meta – our review of which can be read here – and to celebrate the release, we caught up with guitarist Goldberg and vocalist Scorpion to get an insight into their musical tastes and influences. Listen below or on our last.fm page here.

A song that influenced them
Goldberg: System of a Down – Deer Dance
Toxicity as a whole greatly influenced me, but I’m mentioning Deer Dance since its my favorite from the album. System was one of the few heavy bands that wasn’t afraid of being highly eccentric and experimental (both musically and lyrically), yet still wrote really catchy, meaningful songs. Definitely a huge influence on Nekrogoblikon.

Scorpion: Weird Al Yankovic – Everything You Know Is Wrong
Weird Al was pretty much all I listened to before I was 14. This is a great song, with great music, performance & lyrics. Always made me think, which I appreciate.

A song they wish they could have written
Goldberg: Devin Townsend – Vampira
Devin Townsend is one of the greatest prog/shred guitarists out there, yet he never lets that stop him from writing simple, fun, and catchy songs that don’t rely on flashy leads or solos to be interesting. Vampira is a prime example, and the opening/verse has what I consider to be one of the most infectious riffs ever.

Scorpion: Iron Maiden – Hallowed Be Thy Name
Such a great, epic track… I’d love to be able to sing like Bruce Dickinson 🙂

Their favourite Nekrogoblikon song
Goldberg: Full Body Xplosion
This is ever-changing, but at the moment I’d say my favorite Nekrogoblikon song is Full Body Xplosion. The writing process for FBX was the most collaborative out of all the songs, and we’re all really happy with how it turned out. In general it seems like our best output is the result of bouncing musical ideas off one another.

Scorpion: I don’t have a favorite Nekrogoblikon song. That’s like asking which is my favorite fingernail or something. They’re mainly just a part of me… I don’t spend too much time thinkin’ about em.

A song they have recently been listening to a lot
Goldberg: Faith No More – Midlife Crisis
It’s a classic, but recently I’ve found myself listening to it more and more (probably since they’ve reunited with a new album and all). The chorus is just so anthemic and memorable, and Mike Patton is probably one of my favorite vocalists ever.

Scorpion: Self – Monogamy
A song I’ve been listening to a lot recently is this song Monogamy by some band/guy on spotify called Self. I found it while browsing thru the “What’s new” pages on Spotty. Really catchy, I love the writing style and catchiness. Reminds me a lot of my own writing style.

Their all-time favourite song
Goldberg: Tool – Lateralus
Really tough question, but this has consistently been one of my favorite songs since the album came out in 2001. Very epic and meaningful, it still gives me chills when I listen to it.

Scorpion: Don’t have one.
