Interview With The Nothing

Let me introduce you to The Nothing – a band made up of ex-members of such bands as Ortega, Covergirl, Accident Music and Ella Carrera. The Nothing are the kind of band who refuse to be pigeonholed. The bands debut self-titled EP is four tracks of original, well written and well played rock. It has elements of metal, punk and pop, and to be honest, it’s great. I’ve had the song ‘So It Begins…’ stuck in my head for days.

The guys are passionate about the music they are writing and playing. They really mean it and it comes from the heart. We caught up with singer/guitarist Ceri Collins who told us all about this new exciting band. (The band are completed by Rob on guitar, Adam on bass and Si on drums)

How did you get started?
Coffee, relentless and red bull.

What have you got going on at the moment?
Planning 2012 and the next few years, by that I mean writing songs, having fun and loving playing live, don’t need anything else. If there are answers like “looking to get signed” from other bands, don’t bother reading the interviews, you’re just a number to them.

Favourite music and why?
Any music I’ve paid for because it is all worth contributing to.

Favourite book and why?
My booky wook by Russell Brand. Not a big fan of reading fiction and he’s a very funny and eloquent man.

Favourite film and why?
The Dark Knight. Best performance of my generation. RIP Heath.

Best experience in the business?
Walking onto the Blackpool Ballroom stage to 2000 people the first night Covergirl played the Lostprophets tour. No feeling in my life will rival it… until we do it as The Nothing.

Why should Soundscape readers care?
Because we’re 100% honest. You want made up, cheesy, stereotypical clichè shit? Try a lot of bands featured in a lot of other music magazines etc. We’d say the same to them too. We’re real people with a realist outlook.

Tell our readers an interesting fact about band?
The name comes from The NeverEnding Story and its a fantastic drinking game. Do a shot whenever a character says it.

Best thing about coming from Wales?
Our accent! Hahaha no, being Welsh is one of the things I am most proud of. I’m beyond proud of coming from Wales because my family have made me who I am, they’re Welsh, there’s an air of fighting spirit in all of Wales, we’re a do or die underdog nation and we’ll go until our hearts stop beating.

Who are your role models/idols?
My parents, grandparents & brother. Plain and simple.

Hardest thing about the current business?
The fact it’s just business now. Songs don’t matter, it’s Facebook likes, who you know, “how many people can you pull in”, who you can kiss ass enough to in order to have a shred of hope given to you. We don’t want it given to us, we want to work or it’s not worth having. I just hate that it’s more who’s annoying enough to get it. Cowell has ruined 80% of the industry, shithouse promoters the rest (for bands like us anyway).

Strangest gig you’ve ever played?
Solo acoustic show on a golf course. Nice people though to be fair.

If you could choose one super power what would it be?
To be able to fly. Or to be able to piss £50 notes.

If you won the lottery what’s the first thing you would do?
Make that noise Cartman does when he inherits one million dollars.

What do you want on your gravestone?
“Died doing what he loved, leaving behind things worth remembering”.

Ever been attacked by an animal?
Believe it or not, a chihuahua called Romeo. We’re best mates now though.

Favourite Batman actor?
Best Batman is Christian Bale by a mile.

Most embarrassing thing to happen to you while in the band?
Snapping a string with the first chord of the first song when we played in Guildford, then having to re-string it with a crowd watching. It was uncomfortable.

Whats the best and worst part about being in a band?
Best – Writing and finishing a song, then playing it. Watching your ideas come alive I guess.

Worst – Being treated like a twat by 98% of people within the “business”, i.e. cack promoters, arsehole arrogant bands you play with or meet and generally the whole hierarchy some clowns have.

What was the last album you bought?
A7X self titled. Forgot how good that band were.

Most embarrassing clothing item owned by you or a band mate?
I don’t embarrass easily but Rob has some big furry monster slippers. To be fair they’re awesome but the embarrassing part is he prowls our apartment in them. Seriously, does the hands and teeth too.

Best Tour story?
Excess or R and R isn’t really my thing to be honest but I did once witness a man have a full on fist fight with a wall in Ilfracombe. He was arguing with it too and I mean answering back non-existant insults and everything. Genius.

So if you are fed up of bands being all style and no substance then please go check out The Nothing, who are the exact opposite, an honest, hardworking and above all, fucking rocking band. You wont be disappointed.
