White Miles are currently out on tour with Eagles Of Death Metal. We caught up with them for an insight into the band!
Can you introduce yourself and tell me a bit about the band?
We are two kids, constantly trying to take control over our own minds and bodies – didn’t manage to yet, but we are trying since november 2011. White Miles is a two-piece-band since we are afraid that a third bandmember would probably get lost constantly or accidentally get killed. This band is more than just playing music together, it’s a lifestyle!
How did the band get started?
It started with a music session in the middle of the night, both drunk, both motivated and BOOM that’s it!!
Where do you draw influences from?
Lofi: We got a lot of influences, a lot of bluesy stuff. and bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, Joan Jett…and of course bands like The Dead Weather, The Dandy Warhols, PJ Harvey, The Kills…and a lot more! 😀
Medina: I am totally into the guitar playing style of Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) and I love the Dandy Warhols, the Cure, the Pixies, the Nervous return, Etta James, the Rolling Stones, Tito & Tarantula, PJ Harvey. I find it very inspiring to hang around at a house party with strangers, all covered with smokes and beer.
Do you have any role models in the industry?
Like we said there are different kinds of people. Every day is different, everyday it’s a new one.
What has been your best experience in the industry?
Touring, studio, going on the road, working on new stuff, going back on the road, meeting new people, artists, music lovers, strangers, going home and getting back on the road and fuck yeah record a record when it’s time to!! But, when is the right time? ALWAYS!!!
What is the most difficult thing about the industry?
To accept the fact that all these rich labels are still creating pop models, leaving the rock n roll out.
Last year you released your debut album Job: Genius, Diagnose: Madness – can you describe your writing and recording process for it?
It took us almost a year to record our debut album. We had a bunch of songs already ready to record, but songs like Job: Genius, Diagnose: Madness turned out to a song while we were doing the pre-production sessions. Lofi started with the drum-beat at the beginning and I added the guitar right away. It’s a drum/vocal song, cause the guitar is simple as fuck.
It’s probably like in every band, you come up with an idea, start to smoke, drink, chill, hang in the garden, get inspired by whatever and shut yourself in the studio and start to jam and feel it, or not. It can take a few sessions to finish a song, but sometimes we write it down just right away.
We are happy that we are not focused on a specific genre, so the recording was rich in variety. You hear the blues, you hear rock songs, acoustic guitars, cajon, noises, hammond, synths and weird talking, everything packed in different kinds of songs.
Which song on it are you most proud of?
Job: Genius, Diagnose: Madness – weird song.
Were there any songs that were more of a challenge to perfect?
There was no specific song on the old record, but all the songs got recorded with a click and we found out that we are not a fan of that. We would call our new record as a challenge, because we recorded all the songs live, without click and we are very proud of it, because all the energy got captured on that record.
And finally what are your plans for 2016?
