Interview with Fairfield

Rising from the ashes of Mimi Soya Let me introduce you to Fairfield, a female fronted indie rock band from London. The separate members of the band have a wealth of touring experience and have sold thousands of units of music between them so prepare yourself for something a bit special. We spoke to the band to give us the lowdown on what they are up to.

Who are you and what do you do?  Mike: We are a four-piece rock band from around London. Jorja: Vocals, Nick: Guitar, Mike: Bass, Sam: Drums.

Where did the bands name come from?  Mike: I grew up in a small town called Horley in Surrey. Faifield Avenue was the road I grew up in but Nick and Sam’s last band were called Exit Avenue so we just stuck with Fairfield as not to be too freaky!

How did you get started?  Mike: I used to be in a band with Jorja called Mimi Soya. In the final stages of the band we had Sam playing drums as we already knew him via the touring circuit with Exit Avenue. When we formed a new band we had Nick audition and he just blew all the other guitarists out of the water.

What have you got going on at the moment?  Mike: We have recorded out first video for our debut single “Earthquake.” It was released at the end of May. After that we are concentrating on the second single.

Favourite music and why?  Mike: My all time personal bands are At the Drive-In and Biffy Clyro but at the moment I’m listening to Drake, Bombay Bicycle Club and Ben Howard.

Favourite book and why? Mike: My favourites books are autobiographies of Rockstars like Slash, Anthony Kiedis and Motley Crue. The stories are unbelievable!

Favourite film and why?  Mike: My top 5 are probably Alien, Momento, Gladiator, Reservoir Dogs and Sixth Sense. I like anything that is original and gripping.

Best experience in the business?  Mike: In my old band I supported Cobra Starship on their 10 date UK tour in 2008 playing to sold-out Academies. The crowds were amazing!

What’s your writing and recording process?  Mike: Either Nick or I will come up with a song on guitar then take it to Jorja. She usually has lyrics already so we just all sit around writing/tweaking vocal melodies. All the while Sam is thinking of drum parts. Once the vocals are done we go to a practice room and sort the drums out live. Then onc we have 3 new songs we record them at Nick’s studio in Hitchin over the course of a weekend.

What inspires you?  Mike: It is genuinely inspiring when I discover new orginal music. The industry gets too saturated with music that has been done so often before, which can be draining. When new music I like comes out it gives me hope.

Who are your role models/idols?  Mike: All my favourite bands/artists that have sustained a lasting career in the industry, re-inventing themselves on each album.
