Paradise Lost’s One Second album is now twenty years old and what better way to commemorate this milestone than with a special rerelease that sees the album remastered by the band’s current producer (Jamie Gomez) and also features a bonus live album from the 1998 show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London.
There’s a nice fresh crispness to the remastered songs, but they still have all the charm of the original sound, so this is exactly what you want from a remastering. Additionally, all the songs still sound pretty damn fresh considering they’re now 20 years old, with songs such Say Just Words (still a staple of their live shows) and Blood Of Another effortlessly packing a real punch.
The live album is the audio from one of the sets that features on the band’s Evolve DVD, released for the first time in CD format, and it’s a real treat to listen to – it’s a wonderful insight into the band’s past and is very apt inclusion, given that it was a performance on the original tour in support of the release of One Second. The live tracks are powerful and are a nice addition to the original release.
All in all, a decent reissue and well worth checking out. And if for some insane reason, you’re not familiar with Paradise Lost, then this anniversary edition of One Second is perhaps a good starting point for you too!
