Sammal – Suuliekki Review

Release date: 9th March 2018

YES, YES, YES! NEW SAMMAL! Suffice to say, I’ve been very keen to hear new music from this excellent Finnish prog band. Suuliekki is the third full-length release from them and possibly their strongest bit of work yet.

Suuliekki is an addictive album that you’ll want to listen to over and over, with all of the tracks bringing their own spark to the album. An early highlight is the title track, which serves as the first full-length song of the album, and there’s a nice bit of energy to the song whilst also having a laid-back vibe at the same time. The musical performances are empowering, and the vocals are smooth and emotional. It has a classic Sammal sound whilst also sounding fresh and new, which is the perfect start to an album.

The album progresses tremendously from there, with Pinnalle kaltevalle being a funkier and groovier number that will get your foot tapping, and penultimate track Herran pelko is a somewhat mighty sounding track that features an excellent synth line that will definitely get under your skin and in your head before you know it. Suukiekki as a whole just features a good mix of songs that showcases exactly what this band is capable of.

I mentioned in my last review of Sammal that they’re a band that you definitely need to check out, and Suuliekki just hammers that point home. This is an established, powerful and memorable piece of art, and yet another awesome release from Sammal.

9/10
