Gwydion – Thirteen Review

Release date: 6th July 2018

I only properly got into Gwydion after they split up, which was somewhat of a disappointment for me – but when I learnt they were back, I eagerly awaited new material from them and 2018 sees them return with a bang with their brand new album Thirteen. The fourth full-length release from this talented band, it could perhaps be their strongest yet.

Yes, the music does sound a little bit cheesy at times but that’s what makes it so good. There’s so much power and momentum to the music, and the performance from each of the members from start to finish is passionate to say the least; it’s very rewarding to listen to a band giving it their absolute all. The music is catchy and the songs are magnificently constructed – what more can you want?

One of the later tracks, Strength Remains, is a definite highlight. With energetic keys, mighty vocals and a good, chunky wall of sound underneath, the track passes a real punch and there’s plenty of little melodies nestled within the song to get stuck in your head before you even realise it. However as a whole, each track has something unique to give, so they’re all highlights in their own way.

Gwydion are back at full strength, and Thirteen is an album you won’t be forgetting in a hurry. A very refreshing and enjoyable listen.

9/10
