Defying The Righteous Way is album number five from Finnish doom outfit Cardinals Folly and it’s another good effort from the three-piece.
Although it’s a little predictable in the sense it doesn’t tread much new ground, Defying The Righteous Way is nevertheless a solid and sound piece. Cardinals Folly have this great fuzzy tone to their music, giving the tracks a dark and mysterious edge, and the contrast of heaviness against melody works well.
The album has a good pace, with tracks flowing well from one to the next, and in particular the way it segues from one side to the other is great – if you’re listening on vinyl then fifth track The Living Dead serves as a nice little intro before they ramp up the pace again, and if you’re listening via digital means then it works well at linking the two parts of the album together.
If you liked their past releases, then you’ll definitely enjoy Defying The Righteous Way. Cardinals Folly know what works for them, and although there’s no surprises to be fund this time around, it can’t be denied that this is another well-constructed and enjoyable listen.
