In the Lugubrious Silence of Eternal Night (try saying that fast!) is the second album from atmospheric black metal project Golden Ashes, and although it does have its flaws, it’s an overall great little listen.
The somewhat fuzzy tone gives the music a bit more ambience, and the dark-sounding synths really create atmosphere, but the vocals unfortunately get a bit lost in the mix. Subsequently the flow feels a little disjointed as a result, because at times it doesn’t feel like there’s a driving force behind the tracks and it’s a little more difficult to fully get into the songs and fully appreciate them.
It is worth digging a little deeper and giving the songs a bit more attention because they are really good. Fifth track From Grace Into Utter Ruin is a personal highlight; in particular, the synth solo just after the middle has a little bit of a Windir vibe (definitely not a bad thing!) and adds a great bit of variety into the mix.
All in all, Golden Ashes has made a great sophomore album, and it definitely leaves you hungry for more – I for one will definitely be looking forward to hearing future music from the project!
