Interview with Doomed From Day One

Ahead of the release of their upcoming EP Nine Fingers, we caught up with Doomed From Day One to ask them a few questions. See what we asked and how they answered below.

Could you introduce yourselves to the readers of Soundscape Magazine who may not know who you are?
We’re a progressive death metal band from the South-East of the UK that formed around November 2009. We played our first show in May 2010 and since then have played a large number of shows across the UK and Europe.

You’re soon going to be releasing your EP Nine Fingers. Could you tell us a little bit about the writing/recording process?
The writing process for Nine Fingers has been quite a long one. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve released any new material due to a small line up change and having to spend time finding a replacement meant that our timeline for the new release had to be prolonged. The initial ideas were formed between our two guitarists. We tend to use Guitar Pro to aid us in our song writing process, makes it easier to float ideas between one another and tweak them. Once we had full song ideas we came together and worked on the arrangement of each song. The lyrics for this EP were written by our vocalist Sean and the phrasing we worked on together. We started off with some rough demos and then went on to record, mix and master the EP with Chris Munday at CJM Productions. We’re incredibly happy with how the EP has turned out and can’t wait to release it in October.

Which track is your favourite on the EP?
I think most of us would agree that our favourite track on the EP is At Graves End. It’s the proggiest song we’ve written and it’s fast and aggressive at times which really gets us pumped.

The list of bands you’ve toured with is pretty impressive! Which tour has been your favourite?
I’m sure all of us have our own favourite but I’d probably say my personal favourite was our weekender in Belgium. It was awesome to finally get over to Europe, all the shows were rad and we had a jokes time with some of the locals.

Similarly, if you could tour with any band, who would it be?
Again I’d say we’d all have our own choices but I reckon we could all agree on touring with The Black Dahlia Murder. Not only are they a great band but it seems like they’re up for a good laugh and easy to get along with.

What is your favourite thing about touring?
Probably getting to meet new people and reaching out to new places. If we weren’t in a band we wouldn’t have got to see or visit some of the places we have.

And what is your least favourite thing about touring?
Probably squeezing in to a Vauxhall Zafira with all our merch and gear. It can be pretty cramped at times and can drive you crazy! Gotta love it at the same time though.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
If you’ve listened to our band before you’ll know we like to mix it up a little, crossing between different genres. So, somebody not in the metal genre would be interesting, someone like Bliss n Eso. But in all honesty, just hanging out with them would be cool!

And who is your biggest musical influence?
Because of the wide and varied taste of music between our members we’d all have different answers for this question. But I’d have to say for me it’d be Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple. He was the reason why I picked up a guitar so I guess if I was never introduced to that band I may never have started learning guitar.

Do you have any interesting tour stories or anecdotes?
We played a last minute show in a small town in North Wales called Rhyl back in March 2013. Little did we know it would be one of the best shows we’ve played. It was the last night the venue was open and everyone was in party mode which resulted in the crowd tearing the roof down! Was such a good night! We’ll be returning to Rhyl during our October tour.

What are your hopes for the future?
On top of our EP release show and tour in October we plan to hit Europe again before Christmas. We have a couple shows with Hacktivist in December and we’re really looking forward to playing The Northern Darkness Festival that month too. We wanna keep as busy as possible and continue that on into 2014. We’ve already started writing material for the release after Nine Fingers so you may well see us release our first album during 2014.

Nine Fingers is out on October 21. Keep an eye on the site for our review of it coming soon!
