Three is the magic number, just ask Black Circles, a new dynamic alternative rock trio from Kent.
The band play well written, well produced, anthemic, punch-the-air rock, full of infectious melodies but with an edgy sound. Debut single ‘Little Girl’ is an impressive release, full of buzz-saw guitars, definitely one not to miss. I can’t wait to hear what else this exciting band come out with.
Here’s the singer/guitarist Dan to give us the low down on this new UK rock sensation.
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Black Circles – an alternative rock band from Kent. I play guitar and sing, Mayumi plays the bass and Simon hits the drums.
How did you get started?
I moved back to Kent to form a new band. I met Mayumi at a gig in town and we hit it off. Simon was recommended to us by a mutual friend. And as they say, the rest is history.
Favourite music and why?Â
Mmm… that’s always a difficult question to answer. We obviously all have a passion for rock music, but at the end of the day, a good song is a good song, no matter what the genre – we’ll like it.
Favourite book and why?
One of my favourite books is Happiness TM by Will Ferguson. It’s about a self-help manual that actually works. People all over the world, become obsessed with it and live their lives by it. It’s an interesting concept, with plenty of twists and turns.
Favourite film and why?
Don’t think I have a favourite, more like favourites. Definitely Goodbye Lenin! It really captures the feeling of the time – tragic, funny and uplifting.
Best experience in the business?
Playing to new people and getting new fans.
Tell our readers an interesting fact about yourself/company/band?
Two of us have incredibly rare eye conditions. Mine is so rare, that the Ophthalmologist at the hospital let all his students come in and look at my weird eye – felt like a freak that day.
Best thing about playing in Wales?
We love playing Wales and love the Welsh people. We once turned up at a venue in Wales only to be told the gig had been pulled. A local lad from the support band said he could arrange another gig somewhere else. We were a bit sceptical to be honest. We ended playing at his friend’s place – some disused warehouse. They must have phoned around a lot, because there was a 100 strong crowd. It turned out to be a cool night – got to love that Welsh spirit!
Who are your role models/idols?
Any band that works hard and believes in themselves. Always inspiring.
Hardest thing about the current business?
For us, its finding like-minded people. But we get there in the end.
Head over to the bands myspace (www.myspace.com/blackcirclesband) to hear ‘Little Girl’ and a couple of other tracks to wet your appetite.
