blanket – How To Let Go Review

Release date: 18th May 2018

How To Let Go is the debut album from blanket, following on from their previous EP Our Brief Encounters. It shows a good amount of progression for the band, and is an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Largely instrumentally led, with a few sprinklings of vocals for good measure, How To Let Go is a very immersive bit of work with a nice bit of intricacy to it that means you’ll pick up on different little details on each subsequent listen. It’s stunningly beautiful and a highlight of the album comes with seventh track Turn Ourselves To Stone. The smooth vocals will give you goosebumps and the instrumentation adds so much atmosphere – there’s big, epic instrumental lines and stripped-back simplistic sections, and they merge together to create a stunning track as a whole.

In my previous review of their EP, I mentioned that the numerous spoken sections sounded a little awkward and gave the piece a somewhat jerky flow. With How To Let Go, blanket have changed their approach and have done away with them, and despite it only being a relatively small part, the difference it has made is massive because the album flows much better and feels a lot more coherent as a result – it’s a lot easier to connect with as well.

How To Let Go is a beautiful piece of work. blanket have crafted a stunning album and it’s an absolute joy to listen to. Make sure you check this out – particularly if you’re into your cinematic rock.
