Release date: 29th June 2018 (originally released 26th February 2001)
Believe In Nothing, the eighth studio album from Paradise Lost, was originally released over seventeen years ago, in February 2001. Despite the band commenting in the past that they weren’t entirely happy with it, this album has always been my favourite of theirs so when I heard the news they were going to remaster it and re-release it, I was rather excited to see what twists and changes would be given to the songs I already loved.
There’s a definite darker vibe to the album as a whole, and whilst the music itself doesn’t massively differ from the original offering, there’s a definite difference and it sounds fresh and rejuvenated. Fader is an early highlight (the slightly more stripped-back vocal-led section at 2:55 works especially well!) and really sets the scene well for things to come. Meanwhile, later track Sell It To The World is perhaps furthest away from the original material thanks to the choral introduction. Whilst not one of the standout tracks from the album’s original release, it definitely has an extra sparkle on this reissue.
Indeed, Believe In Nothing just sounds more engaging. The mix on the original was a little wishy-washy, whereas this mix is punchier and more defined, and it sounds so much more coherent. Whilst I have always enjoyed the original release, the reissue has definitely improved and refined the album, and it’s fantastic. If you didn’t quite connect with Believe In Nothing first time round, then it’s certainly worth giving this reissue another go.
