Callidice – Anthem For Resistance Review

Release date: 18th May 2018

As soon as the new album from Callidice, Anthem For Resistance, appeared in my inbox for review, I immediately jumped onto it. Their EP Scarlet was massively promising and consisted of some excellent tracks, so I was very keen to see how the band had progressed with their first full length release. Anthem For Resistance is a powerful piece of work and builds on what made their previous releases so good, so it makes for an excellent listen as a whole.

One of the best things about Callidice’s sound, which helps to set them apart from the crowd, is that there’s a good, dark heaviness to it all and it contrasts really well against the more electronic elements of the music. Fourth track Scarred is a particularly good example of this; the harsh vocals and the wall of guitars add a good, chunky heaviness to the song, whilst the clean vocals and keyboard lines help to divide the song up well, adding a little more variety whilst simultaneously contributing melodies that will get stuck in your head. Additionally, closing track Anthem For Resistance is a triumphantly epic way to bring the release to a very satisfying close and it just sounds so massive that it will blow you away.

Callidice keep things interesting from start to finish, constantly engaging the listener with catchy melodies and riffs so chunky you can’t help but want to bang your head along to them – this is certainly the sort of album that will translate well in a live environment and I’m already eager to start looking into flying out to Finland to try and catch them live…!

All in all, a very solid and mighty bit of work. Anthem For Resistance is something Callidice should be massively proud of – it is very promising and if you haven’t heard of them yet, then what are you waiting for?!
