Callidice – Shades Among Us Review

Release date: 9th June 2021

I’ve always enjoyed Callidice’s music, so I was very excited to see a promo in my inbox for their latest EP, Shades Among Us. This EP is their first release with their new singer Tero, and it’s a seamless transition between this release and 2018’s Anthem For Resistance – it feels like he has always been a part of the band.

Shades Among Us features three full tracks along with an instrumental opening number, and it’s a really mighty listen. Each track has a decent amount of bite, with a good balance between melody and aggression, and it’s an EP I keep wanting to come back to for another listen.

Emperor’s New Clothes is a punchy in-your-face track that gets straight to the point. The vocals are powerful and the instrumentation adds a lot of momentum, keeping things moving and making you want to nod your head along to it. Meanwhile following track Happiest Country is a more melodic number that has a fairly upbeat vibe on the surface – but look a little closer at the lyrics and you realise the subject matter of the song aludes to Finland being anything but the happiest country to live in. Finally, closing track Treehouse brings the EP to a satisfying close. Its massive chorus is particularly effective; it really leaves an impression on you with the strong cleans paired with the powerful harsh vocals atop of the soaring guitar line.

As a whole, Callidice have created another strong release. If Shades Among Us is anything to go by, then we can definitely expect exciting things from their next full-length.
