Interview With Deathstars

Deathstars

Ahead of Deathstars’ show in Manchester (see our review of the night here) we sat down with Nightmare for a quick chat. See what happened below!

First of all can you introduce yourself and tell me a bit about the band?
I am Nightmare, I play in Deathstars and I would say we are an industrial/rock/metal band from Sweden.

You’re currently out on a European tour in support of your new album The Perfect Cult – how’s it been going so far?
It’s been really really great, actually! We started out in Russia then went through some of the Scandinavian countries and then down all through Europe – and we’re finally in the UK.

The last leg of the tour!
Yup. We’re going back to mainland Europe for a couple of shows in the Netherlands and one in Germany but basically this is the end.

What’s been the best show of the tour?
Moscow was amazing…we’ve had a few really great shows. Paris was also amazing.

What made those shows so good in particular? The crowd reaction?
Yeah, and everything just worked – the crowds were insane and everything just went really great.

Any interesting stories to report? I know you had a bus fire recently…
Yeah, the tour bus burned up in the Alps. Aside from that, we’ve had a lot of crazy, crazy stuff happening but let’s keep it private!

Moving onto the new album, earlier this year, you put out The Perfect Cult. How would you describe your writing and recording process?
It’s usually between me and Whiplash. He writes the lyrics and I write the music, and we send stuff back and forth to each other, trying out different stuff. Then we meet up and go through the smaller details, then take it to the rehearsal room where all of us start playing it.

So would you say you took the same approach as you did with past releases?
It’s been a little more like a full band this time, since we have live drums for the first time on this album. So we spent more time in the rehearsal time to get the drums right.

Which song on the album are you most proud of?
Hmm…which song on this album? (pauses and has a long think) I don’t know! I’m proud of all of them.

One of my favourites is Asphalt Wings – can you tell me a bit more about that?
It’s kind of a dark song! It’s pretty groovy and has this beat you can kind of nod your head to.

Will it be in the set tonight?
Sadly not. It doesn’t really work live. It’s kind of a different song and works a lot better on CD for sure.

And now onto a few random quick-fire questions – what was your last dream about?
Wow…to be honest, I hardly remember them. I just know that after the bus fire, I had really bad nightmares. Like, really weird stuff.

If you could choose to have a super power, what would it be?
(laughs) Oh my god, if I had a super power…I don’t know! I would probably want a flamethrower or flames shooting out of my ass!

If you could choose an animal to represent the band, what would it be?
A seal, because they’re round and funny.

If you could replace the soundtrack to any movie with your own music, which one would it be and why?
Maybe Blade Runner. It would be cool, but it would also be a shame as well because it already has a killer soundtrack. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time.

And finally, if Deathstars could put their name to a product, what would it be and why?
Now that is a tough one! Champagne, maybe – something glittery!
