Newcastle rockers Harwood Drive have just released a new track, so we thought we should catch up singer Lucy Curry to find all about it.
You have just released a new track A Thousand Lives, where was it recorded and with who? We recorded at a studio local to us in Newcastle after being really impressed with their work. We worked with Mark Broughton, a session engineer. He really got the sound we were going for and we’re really happy with the outcome!
What’s the song about? The lyrics paint the picture of the end of the world; all red skies and landslides sort of thing. The song’s actually about a relationship falling apart and they’re both just watching it happen because there’s nothing to keep them together anymore. One of those relationships where it’s too far gone to save it but you don’t want to say it’s over because you’ll miss having them around. Deep, I know!
How and when was it written? It was written around June this year and after playing it on a few UK dates and getting great feedback, we decided we’d definitely record it.
The lads wrote the music and I instantly got a chorus line but it took me a while to find a verse melody that I really liked, that’s where my best friend Sarah comes in! We had studied music together and had to compose our own songs and hers was a beautiful little track, think ‘Always Attract’ by YMAS style. But she said she’d never use it for anything and I thought it was a waste because it was so good! She was so pleased when I mentioned the idea of using her verses in a Harwood Drive song and that was it, A Thousand Lives was done.
Is it part of an EP? When will this be released? The single is part of a 5-track EP, ‘Iscariot’. It’s going to be released early 2014 and we’ll have a date confirmed ASAP.
What will the future hold Harwood Drive? We have some exciting plans for 2014 and we can’t wait to share them with everyone and get to play our music for way more people. 2013 has been a great year; recording an EP, playing around the UK, playing O2 academy 1 – twice! These are things we didn’t think would happen so soon.
We’re into our countdown for our show on the 20th December with Newcastle lads Boy Jumps Ship. We’re so excited for the show and it’s looking to be a sell out! Keep your eyes peeled for announcements over the next few month, 2014 is going to be the best yet.
