Hautajaisyö – Matkalla Kohti Hautaa Review

Release date: 2nd February 2018

Hautajaisyö are back with their second album, Matkalla Kohti Hautaa, but unfortunately it’s a little more of a challenging listen that doesn’t quite hit the heights of their previous self-titled effort.

The main problem is that there isn’t much variety between tracks, and it just feels like there are tracks being thrown into your face one after the other. At times the vocals sound a little grating and monotonic, not quite moving harmoniously with the music, and the lack of melody as a whole leaves the album feeling a little sluggish. It’s a shame because Hautajaisyö does have potential but they haven’t quite hit the target with this one.

There are some good points on the album, however, with middle track Minut Pelastakaa being one of the stronger songs. There’s a little more melody and momentum to this one, meaning it’s a little easier to connect with the song. The instrumentation sounds absolutely mighty and although the vocals could do with a little more variance in tone, as a whole the song is one of the more enjoyable listens on the album.

Matkalla Kohti Hautaa isn’t a dreadful release by any means, but it just feels like it could be a lot better.

5.5/10
