We love discovering new bands, and we love even more sharing them with you, so say hello to The Afterparty, a pop rock band from the south coast of the UK.Â
This 5 piece are definitely up-and-comers on the UK scene right now, with debut EP ‘Restless’ getting great reviews.
The band are about to head out on a big UK tour with Jody Has A Hitlist, so we took the chance to get the know the band a little bit more.
Who are you and what do you do? Â Right now we got Nic, Joe and Matt! Nic being the lead singer, and Joe & Matt being the guitarists.
Where did the bands name come from? Â We’re very much a party band, and having a lot of fun nights out involving booze. It fits well with our lifestyle, and it also means we have something to live up to when on tour!
How did you get started? Â When we previously played in different bands across the music scene, we met each other when playing shows. We realised we all shared the same passion and interests when it came to writing and performing. That’s when we decided to come together and we’ve been working hard ever since.
What have you got going on at the moment? Â We’ve been pretty busy lately! We signed to a new label Engineer Records, released our debut EP ‘Restless’ which we’ve had an amazing response from. We also released the video for the single ‘So Much To Say’ which we were proud of. We have just finished shooting another video for our second single ‘Sticks And Stones’ which we can’t wait for everyone to see. In September we’re back on tour around the UK with Jody Has A Hitlist which we’re very excited for!
Favourite music and why? Â The number one song for us is Life by the one and only Des’Ree, it’s pretty much our anthem. Other than that, we’ve got such a wide range music taste! In our van you’ll hear anything from Craig David to The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Favourite book and why? Â The Internet Is A Playground by David Thorne, it’s hilarious! The guy is an absolute genius.
Favourite film and why? Â Hot Rod! For those that have seen it will definitely know why!
Best experience in the business? Â Playing Hevy Fest has been our best experience so far! Nothing is better than sharing the stage with some of the bands that have been such a big inspiration to you when growing up. And to top it off, getting to party at the free bar with them all night!
Why should Soundscape readers care? Â Because we’re the ultimate party band, and who doesn’t like to party?!
Tell our readers an interesting fact about the band? Â Our bassist David Sheard is the most nicknamed man in British music, with 79 nicknames. Here’s our top 10:
1. D
2. David Money
3. D$ (D Dollar)
4. Money
5. D Logic
6. David Moonset
7. Bank of Dave
8. Super Dave
9. Moneyshot
10. Wave
What’s the best and worst things about touring? Â Best thing about tour – we get to do what we love most and that’s play shows every night, meet lots of new people and party with them in different towns. The worst thing about tour is when it comes to an end, and you’re back to reality. Also, when we’re on the road we suffer with major shinbad and tour-eye (shinbad is horrible pains in your shins caused by jumping, and tour-eye is caused by alcohol making them go crazy red).
Most embarrassing thing to happen to you while in the band? Â We’ve been through so much together, nothing really embarrasses us anymore! Which we’re not quite sure if that’s a good thing or not! But one time, Matt done a super jump off the drum kit at Hevy Fest and he didn’t quite land it… We still don’t let him forget it!
What’s your writing and recording process? Â We come up with ideas and take them to Matt where he would demo them. After a bottle of cheap wine and some role play, the tracks are ready to be taken into the studio!
What inspires you? Â The lyrics to Life by Des’Ree. Also, the best people in our lives and not forgetting the worst people too. We take our inspirations from the highs and lows of our everyday lives.
Best thing about playing in Wales? Â Unfortunately we haven’t played Wales yet! We’ve heard great things and can’t wait to get over there and see how well the Welsh party!
Who are your role models/idols? Â Nic relates a lot to Jesse Lacey from Brand New as his lyrics are inspiring. We like to put on a crazy live performance too, Joe & Matt look up to The Dillinger Escape Plan as they accomplish it so well.
What’s the hardest thing about the current business? Â Definitely the competition! The UK rock scene is booming at the moment with so many great upcoming bands, and we’re glad to be amongst it.
Favourite Batman actor? Â Now that the new Batman film is released, every guy knows that it’s no longer about Batman… It’s all about Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. She is literally the one! Joe is adamant that he will get to take her out for a drink soon.
