Khroma – Ex Nihilo Review

Release date: 10th September 2021

Ex Nihilo is the third album from Helsinki electro-metal outfit Khroma, and it’s a solid, hard-hitting piece of work. It’s a very tight-knit piece that makes a distinct impact, with powerful songs and catchy riffs – so after not quite connecting with their previous album, it’s great to hear such a strong follow-up.

The vocals are very distinctive, being half-spoken, half-shouted, and they really leave an impression on you as a result. When paired with the mighty instrumentation and electronic lines, they leave a massive impact and you can’t help but want to want to return to the album over and over.

Trace Amounts, the album’s closer, is perhaps the highlight of Ex Nihilo. The track builds up and up as the introduction progresses, before Khroma hit you with a wall of noise, and the vocalised harmonies really juxtapose well against the bellowed lead vocal delivery, leaving a lasting impression on you as the closing chords ring out.

Khroma have definitely ticked all the right boxes with Ex Nihilo, and have made their strongest release to date – hopefully with this album, they will continue to go from strength to strength.
