Lordi – Sexorcism Review

Release date: 25th May 2018

As a long-term Lordi fan (Get Heavy is still as good now as the first time I heard it!) I always make sure to check out their new releases. Unfortunately their latest couple of albums have left a little to be desired – and it’s not that I’m stuck in the past, it’s the fact that they haven’t seemed to progress their sound and music at all.

To cut straight to the chase, there is not a single surprise to be found on Sexorcism. This is an album that sounds exactly like all their other albums and whilst it was enjoyable the first few times, it’s disappointing they just seem to be churning out the same album time and time again, just with slightly different melodies and lyrics. Stylistically there’s just no variation and progression, and whilst it could be argued that Lordi have simply found their sound and they’re running with it, to me it just feels like a lazy approach – a more adventurous attitude could make for a much more exciting and engaging album as a whole.

Of course, Lordi has always been more of a ‘live’ band rather than a ‘studio’ band. Just go to one of their shows and you’ll see what I mean – you get treated to a full theatrical show and performance, with each song bringing something different to the performance. So whilst I know that the Sexorcism tour will be engaging and exciting, it’s just a shame that the accompanying album is a bit of a letdown.

4/10
