Manes – Slow Motion Death Sequence Review

Release date: 24th August 2018

Manes is one of those bands that you’re never quite sure what they’re going to do next. They keep you on your toes, constantly creating unique and individual songs for your listening pleasure, and Slow Motion Death Sequence is a fine release from the experimental Norwegian outfit.

Admittedly, I didn’t quite connect with their previous full-length release Be All End All, but just because you didn’t enjoy one album doesn’t mean you should completely write off a band. Slow Motion Death Sequence feels stronger and more coherent, somehow, with plenty of excellent inclusions for you to sink your teeth into.

One of the best things about Manes is that you’re never quite sure where they’re going next, and each twist and turn brings something different to the table, whilst flowing well from one track to the next. The lead vocals are a great driving force to the music; they’re powerfully emotive and add a lot of colour to the piece as a whole. A good example of this is in fourth track Scion; the electronically driven introduction helps to add a lot of ambience and when the vocals are added, they give the track an extra sparkle. They aren’t a constant feature throughout, with plenty of instrumental sections for good measure, and it’s a good approach because it keeps everything sounding balanced.

All in all, another excellent release from Manes. They’re currently at the top of their game, and it shows with Slow Motion Death Sequence. Now, I just need to see this band live…!
