Midas Fall – Evaporate Review

Release date: 27th April 2018

Evaporate is the fourth album from Scottish duo Midas Fall. It’s a beautiful blend of electronica and post-rock with several other different approaches included for good measure and it makes for a rather stunning listen.

Taking the ‘less is more’ approach for the most part, the largely minimalist sound to the album works well for Midas Fall and you notice a lot more of the little things nestled into the music. The vocals are soft and light, lending themselves well to the airy, gentle vibe of the instrumentation, and come together to create something wonderful. Second track Evaporate is good example of this. The opening featuring strings is stunning, creating a lot of ambience and atmosphere, and the vocals add so much colour to the piece – there’s a quiet beauty to it all.

However, the album could do with a bit more variety. For the most part, all the songs follow the same sort of approach and don’t deviate too far from one another. Whilst the general sound does work for Midas Fall, it would be nice if some of the tracks went against the grain and mixed things up a little just to create a more engaging listen to keep you on your toes.

As a whole, Evaporate is a lovely piece of work. It’s a relaxing and gentle-sounding album with a lovely bit of atmosphere to it and is perfect accompanying music for a chilled-out afternoon.

7.5/10
