There is a lot of fun to be had in metal. A genre known more for its visceral screams and adroit riffs. But, sometimes you have to put aside all that pretence and just enjoy some quality tunage for the sake of– tunage. Nanowar of Steel are like a medicine to the pseudo-serial-ness of modern metal. And, o’ boy is it welcome.
Dislike to False Metal is the Italians’ fifth studio album. The title itself a riff parodying the always on-line and petitioning modern market researcher, or something. This new album is an irreverent mix of musical styles but much less schizophrenic than other attempts to match world music with metal. And, it works. It truly works. Nanowar of Steel are a self-professed comedy band but the music is nothing to balk at.
With the multitude of styles on this album ranging from samba, disco, rock ‘n’ roll, which are all fun, to the more serious symphonic power ballads, there is a song for every playlist. A song that will ramp the energy in the room up to eleven. It is ironic that Italians would introduce Piccante into the musical lexicon. But, here we are. And, if you have made a habit of any single genre then this album will expand your palette with strong notes of world citizen authenticity; Who needs mushrooms to explore new ideas?
Comedy is a hard thing to do right. Nanowar of Steel sing about funny things, get a laugh here and there, but their musicianship is top brass. There is a lot of detail compressed into Dislike to False Metal and when it gets out it is explosive. It is loud, bright and attention grabbing. The technical term is tight. The album is tighter than a Scotsman betting on his sobriety during the world cup.
