Necronomicon Ex Mortis – The Mother of Death Review

Released on: 29th Novemeber 2024

US horrors Necronomicon Ex Mortis are about twenty years too late to really capture the audience of the nineteen-seventies & eighties horror fandom. But, they do employ a good amount of effort. This EP, their fourth to date, is a quality concert of olden horror themed riffage. Prepared with delicacy and served with a dangerous dose of technical prowess.

The Mother of Death is a killer collection of pop culture references laid over a comprehensive set of brutal riffs. Which, unlike the thematic influences, are anything but stale. With chords that escalate and solos that climb, the guitar work on this album is intensely engaged within the concept. Which adds a layer of anxiety inducing comradery. “The horror, the horror– I embrace it.”

The band have yet to release a full album and going by this EP it would be a fun break if they ever did. It would be great to hear their take on Blood & Honey (a Winnie the Pooh story) and other camp, and contemporary, outings. But, where does the line between unsolicited marketing and genuine love for lie. Not on this EP at least. The Mother of Death is more than just a penny in the Mothmans’ buttcrack.
