Oceanwake – Lights Flashing In Mute Scenery Review

Release date: 26th April 2019

The fourth album from Finnish doom outfit Oceanwake, Lights Flashing In Mute Scenery, is another powerful release from the band. Having been a fan of the band since discovering them supporting Moonsorrow at a Finnish gig back in 2015, I’ve followed the band with interest and they continue to floor me with each release they create.

The songs are a little shorter than I’ve grown accustomed to expect from Oceanwake, and the music feels a little ‘lighter’, but that doesn’t mean this album is weaker than their previous releases. Each of the seven tracks has depth and body, with crushing heaviness and a great melodic undertone. From the opening tones of first track Radiant Nightbreak, right through to closer Posthuma, Oceanwake bring you on a stunning journey that’s a pleasure to be a part of.

Currents is one of the stronger tracks that is perhaps most deserving of a closer look. The guitar work throughout is exceptional, giving the song atmosphere and ambience. Additionally, the vocals add a lot of body to the song – the harsh and clean lines give depth and contrast, and add more dimensions to it as a whole.

It’s important for bands to progress, rather than spiral in place releasing the same album over and over, so it’s refreshing to see Oceanwake pushing boundaries with Lights Flashing In Mute Scenery. Make sure you give this album a spin.
