Pentarium – Zwischenwelt Review

Released on: 11th May 2018

Titled Zwischenwelt the sophomore album by the German sixpiece Pentarium sounds like Ramm…

No. For many English speakers there is only one German Gothic Group and all bands who sing in German are compared to them if they feature harsh electric guitars and synths. Yet that is so not the case and there are hundreds if not thousands of bands who sing in German outside of their native homeland. It is okay to be German and not be like Rammstein.

Pentarium are a six piece hell beast from the town of Griesheim in Hesse, Germany. An area rich in history and possibly the ancestral home of many Christmas trees. But this is not about tourism. This is about culture and a devilish melo-death album called Zwischenwelt (Translated: World Between.)

Zwischenwelt is a refreshing true to form melodic death metal album that is composed of eerie synth lines and nasty guttural hooks. The latter courtesy of both the gritty vocals and the bands’ coarse guitar tone. At times venturing into the territory of black metal to create a miasma of extreme, but accessible, metal with which to rock your socks off. And with attention to song writing have put much consideration into having a varied selections of songs that lets each member shine in their own instrumental way.

Reminiscent of early Cradle of Filth mixed in with Fear Factory, and with maybe a touch of Kittie as well, Pentarium are a hot pot of provocative riffs and dulcet keyboard passages. Told in the horrific but enjoyable fashion of death metal. Collectively the band is clearly talented beyond the style and are proving it in the most colourful way.

8/10
