Icon Of The Adversary is the sixth album from Psyclon Nine but whilst I have enjoyed their previous releases, this album feels somewhat lacking in comparison.
I was hoping it would be a grower; occasionally you can get albums that don’t quite speak to you on your first listen but make more of an impression once you hear it a few times, but unfortunately this wasn’t the case with Icon Of The Adversary. There’s just not a lot of variety to the music. The songs all blend into one, and there isn’t much to differentiate from one song to the next – the tracks seem to follow similar formats, with vocal lines all sounding the same and instrumental lines simply sounding like they’re repeating over and over. Final track The Last is an especially hard slog, featuring about ten minutes of nothing but ambient noise to wind things up – you keep thinking something will happen but it never does.
It’s disappointing because Psyclon Nine can – and have – done better than this. Hopefully their next album will see a return to form for them.
