Interview with Sam Little (Eat, Sleep, Attack)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to Mr Sam Little, the artist formerly known as Eat, Sleep, Attack. Some of you may have already heard of this 20 year old singer/songwriter, some may not, but one thing you need to know is the guy is crazy talented, just one listen to last years Eat, Sleep, Attack single “Fallin” and new track “She’s Just Not That Into You” and you’ll see what I mean. Sam has a great voice and a knack for writing catchy-as-hell pop songs which you’ll fall in love with right away. He’ll will be releasing a whole bunch of a new EP on the 19th of April and we spoke to Sam to find out all about it.

1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name’s Sam Little, I’m a singer/songwriter from the south coast of England! I specialize in making really catchy pop songs drenched with handclaps, harmonies, and hooks.

2. How did you get started?
Well I first found out I could sing when I was in school. I actually got bullied into it. I was walking home listening to my walkman (back in the days where we had CD players) and this kid, a few years older than me, grabbed me and was like ‘Oi. You can sing! Learn this song by tomorrow and meet me at the common room’. So I went home, absolutely scared stiff, learnt the song and turned up the next day. Looking back it was pretty funny but at the time I was so scared. All these older kids watching me sing my heart out. Anyway, from then on I stopped getting picked on. I was kinda known as the kid that could sing. Crazy, but I’ve been making music for a while, I used to play in a rubbish pop punk band called Fleeing From Finales, but after being let down various times and finding myself on my own I decided to try it alone. I’ve been solo for just over a year now and it’s going amazing to be honest.

3. What have you got going on at the moment?
Well I’ve just released a load of new things on the internet. I’ve got my website up and running, new songs online, new shirts printed up, the works! I’m well happy with how everything’s gone. But I’m currently working on a few big things behind the scenes. I’m in a lot of meetings and talks with various people. It’s exciting, but it’s just a little tedious! I just wanna get out there on the road and write/play more.

4. Favourite music and why?
Style or artist? Style, it’d probably have to be pop punk. Especially now the summer’s back. Nothing like a barbecue on the beach and some really old songs from the p-rock era! My favourite artist however is Bon Jovi. I’ve got a lot of respect for how long they’ve been going and how hardworking they still are! Plus, you can’t deny that they’ve had some right classic tunes!

5. Favourite book and why?
That’s a difficult one. I love to read but don’t do it often enough. It’s gotta be a book I’ve just finished reading called The Gargoyle, it just had me grabbed from page one. It’s about this guy that’s a porn star/drug addict that has a severe car crash and how he ends up falling in love with a supposed crazy lady. It’s dead interesting, even if I didn’t make it out to be!

6. Favourite film and why?
It’s a film called Balto. Not many people in the UK have heard of it, if any! It’s an animated kids film based on a true story about a dog that saves a village of sick kids. Why is it my favourite? I’m basically a kid at heart. Oh and Phil Collins voices two of the characters.. .Sold?

7. Best experience in the business?
Just shows in general to be honest. You meet some amazing people, even at the worst of shows. I think if I have to narrow it down though it’d be the Gym Class Heroes tour I did a while back. They’re all really nice guys, and it was just the best experience overall. So many good times.

8. Tell our readers an interesting fact about yourself/company/band?
My new EP’s being released in fortune cookies. Oh and once, I actually lifted a tiger. That’s not even a lie.

9. Who are your role models/idols?
Bon Jovi, as I mentioned earlier, but I’ve also got a lot of respect for bands like Four Year Strong, Kids in Glass Houses, Attack! Attack!, just hardworking bands that have slowly gone up the ranks over years. Will Smith is a bit of a hero too.

10. Hardest thing about the current business?
Kids. A lot of kids don’t go to shows anymore. Obviously the cool ones still do, but it’s so damn easy to just watch a youtube video or listen on the internet that shows and CD sales are just going down. It’s sad, because I always meet and watch amazing bands that aren’t getting the exposure they deserve.

10 Random Questions With…

1. Strangest gig you’ve ever played?
I’ve played a cinema in Wisbech, a lorry in Norwich and a boat but I think the weirdest place I’ve ever played is probably in the middle of the river in Salisbury. There’s a video on my computer of that, crazy times.

2. If you could choose one super power what would it be?
Teleportation would be really handy for touring but I think I’d be selfish and choose the ability to change into whatever I want. Imagine going into a toilet and changing into a lion to scare the hell out of the next person that walks in. I love winding people up, so that’d have to be my choice.

3. If you won the lottery what’s the first thing you would do?
Buy somewhere to live and convert one room so all the walls all velcro, the floor’s a trampoline and the roof’s cushioned.

4. What do you want on your gravestone?
‘Samuel Little – enjoy being the diva in heaven’s choir’.

5. Ever been attacked by an animal?
I had a little row with a tiger when I was younger, I was pretty cocky and thought I could wind it up and get away with it. I’ve also been chased by a badger. They’re like the British version of a panda on bad drugs.

6. Favourite Batman actor?
Christian Bale’s pretty sweet. I know I should probably say Adam West, but I’m all about the bad ass version that Bale pulls off.

7. What would you rather be, Ninja or Vampire?
Ninja, hands down. None of that gay, biting necks stuff.

8. What’s the last album you bought?
An album called ‘Sunshine and other Misfortunes’ by the Candle Thieves. They’re my favourite UK band at the moment. Really happy songs about how rubbish life can be and how you should just get over it because life is for having good times. That’s pretty much my ethos, so I’m very much into that record.

9. Most embarrassing clothing item owned by you or a band mate?
Well my friend Chris owns a mankini, but I own a pair of jeggings. They’re for the Blessed By A Broken Heart tour that’s coming up. Me and a few friends are going to go and make absolute fools of ourselves!

10. Best Tour story?
A few years ago I was on tour with We Are The Ocean and Paige and we ended up having a Jagermeister competition. Needless to say, things got messy. There’s a lot I don’t remember, but Dan (WATO) ended up tied to a post outside a service station with nothing but boxers and a werewolf mask on. With some rather explicit markings on his chest. Too funny.
