It is no secret that I love large cinematic soundscapes paired with melodic vocals and lyrics with a deep meaning attached to them, and New York-based progressive symphonic metal band Prime Prophecy delivers in spades with their latest single Memories from the Past.
A continuation of the story they are telling through catchy-as-hell hooks and the flawless production value of their songs, Memories from the Past is best listened to right after watching the music video for Prime Prophecy’s previous haunting single End Of The Beginning.
One thing listeners will notice right away is how Prime Prophecy takes their time to get to the singing. Unlike other artists that seem to place the vocals as the focus and rush right into the vocals, Prime Prophecy takes their time to make sure that the music captures you completely; exactly as it should be with prog music of any kind.
Although Memories from the Past starts deceptively simple with the opening synth riff, it takes no time at all for the band to explode into a large thunderous sound that is tempered by the dark and brooding vocals of lead singer Martin Wilczek. I have drawn comparisons to Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance, and Katatonia here, and if there is perhaps one more name, I would add here it would have to be the legendary David Bowie. Prime Prophecy respectfully wears their music inspirations on their proverbial sleeves without overstepping into the realm of sameness. There is a fresh sound that Prime Prophecy brings to the table with their brand of musicianship, and it is refreshing to hear a band like this after having to deal so long with what is currently considered popular music.
Prime Prophecy reminds me that there is so much great undiscovered music, and it is right there to be found for those wanting to search for it.
Memories from the Past is a brilliant single. It absolutely kicks ass, and I have listened to this song at least ten or more times in a row now, and if you keep focusing on every track on each spin you will come to understand the emotion and skill that every single member brings to the table.
If you like progressive, symphonic metal then look no further than this band and their new single.
