Skognatt – Ancient Wisdom Review

Release date: 3rd March 2018

Ancient Wisdom is my first introduction to German atmospheric black metal project Skognatt and it is certainly a very fine first impression. The album has a lot to give over the course of its six tracks and is definitely worth a closer look.

Skognatt works hard at setting the scene for the album with first track Ancient Wisdom, which also serves as the title track. The listener is first of all treated to a more melodic, sparse introduction before a fuller, rounder sound kicks in and the album gets fully underway. Additionally, the versatile vocals add a lot to the music – from the whispers to the snarls and growls, the numerous different approaches add an extra sparkle to the music as the listener is never quite sure what is around the corner.

One of the strongest tracks is fourth song Thanatos. The dark vibe to it is absolutely incredible and the ambience created with the melodic undertones juxtaposes very well against the heavier elements of the piece. It’s a very atmospheric track as a whole and showcases the versatility of Skognatt’s songwriting by utilising several stylistically different sections into the song.

All in all, this a very strong album from Skognatt, and there’s also a lot of potential to be found in the performance. Skognatt is definitely a project you need to keep your eyes on.

8.5/10
