Spider Kitten – Concise & Sinister Review

Release date: 13th April

We do rather enjoy Spider Kitten here at Soundscape, so we were very excited to hear of the release of their latest album Concise & Sinister. Once again showcasing their sludgy experimental doomy blend (you can’t really earmark this band into one specific style), this is another great piece of work from the Welsh fourpiece.

The title certainly suits the album well; there’s an innate darkness to the music and there’s a sinister vibe to the album as a whole. The opening track A Glorious Retreat is perhaps the highlight of the album; the massive-sounding melodic/synthesised sections sound rather triumphant up against the crushingly heavy and fuzzy-sounding guitars and drums. The two different elements of the track slot together very well and leaves a massive impression on you as a result.

The album also features a cover of Hank Williams’ Alone & Forsaken. I had to admit, I wasn’t sure how Spider Kitten would approach a cover of a country song, but it’s quite true to the original, yet also doesn’t feel out of place on the album. The melancholic and softer vibe slots in well and also gives the listener time to catch their breath before the band once again brings the noise on the following track.

Once again, Spider Kitten have made an excellent album. If you like your music dark and heavy then this is a band you really need to check out.

9/10
