Tethra – Empire Of The Void Review

Release date: 20th March 2020

You can’t beat a good bit of death/doom, and Tethra’s new album does rather well at ticking all the right boxes. With stunning melodies, crushing heaviness and a breathtaking emotiveness to the entire piece, the album has it all.

It’s difficult to put into words just how impressive the album really is – it’s one of those pieces that really needs to be heard to be fully appreciated, but nevertheless I’m going to give it my best shot. The three-part song Gravity is a particular high point, taking the listener on a musical journey within the album, and each twist and turn adds an extra sparkle to the music. The first part, Ascension, leans more on the heavier side whilst second part Aeons Adrift is more melodic, and third part Ultimo Baluardo is an instrumental number that does well at bringing the trio of songs to a triumphant end.

Another great inclusion is the cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Giving the song a slightly bleaker and melancholic spin, the approach works well and doesn’t feel like a million miles away from the style of the original version – it’s a great take on a classic and Tethra really give the track justice.

Tethra have certainly delivered with Empire Of The Void. If you’re like me, and you like your doom music melacholic and emotive, then this is an album you really need to pay attention to.
