The Legendary Pink Dots are still avant-garde. You would think that their neo-futuristic sound would have been surpassed with something novel by now, but no. The Legendary Pink Dots are avant-garde.
This new Dots album, So Lonely in Heaven, is a wholesome if not morose commentary on the state of an archetypal psyche fixated with the technological abyss. They could have called it Psychic PC– but thankfully did not.
The biting social commentary from the lyrics aside– the production of this artifact is sublime. Where soft warm tones are given a bright canvas over which to resonate. Listening to the sparkle of the guitar, it has that American Country flair. A buoyant rhythm and the bright reverb works very well over the sardonic and staunch English vocals. Where these blues find reprieve they give over to endearing shades of black and purple.
So Lonely in Heaven is a fitting release for the middle of January. Even through its melancholy it offers a strange companion during the darkest season. Albeit company with a tendency to disassociate; to dream in domains excoriated with colours outside of acceptable recourse. The spirit of this new album is vibrant and expresses a gamut of feelings that are often shouted but never heard.
When going over the production the values have not changed much since their last release. It is clear and claustrophobic when need be. It is soft where it hurts and hard when it means to be. The overall sound compliments the songs well making for a perfect headphone listen in a dark room. So Lonely in Heaven contains the thoughts you need when you are deprived of your senses; like a good dream So Lonely in Heaven leaves you cold, awake and wanting.
