The Boy Royals, formerly known as Town, are one of Wales’s most exciting bands right now.
This New Wave band base their sound on classic british bands like The Who and The Jam but with a definitely more spiky and modern twist, and with huge anthem like songs and the perfect amount of swagger and attitude, the band are destined to be huge.
They have played shows with Feeder, had the last single Teenage Sky played on BBC Radio’s 1 and 6 and championed by Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, so big things are definitely gonna happen.
The band have just released a new video for single People Like Us, a new song which is definitely a fist pumping anthem of the highest order, which you can check out below.  The tune will be released digitally on 13th August and the band will be playing a release show on 17th August at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, and for those of you in London the band will be playing The Bull And Gate in Camden, Monday 16th July supporting Joia as part of their EP launch, so try and make it down to one of these as the band are excellent live.
We caught up with Bass player Jamie Roberts for a quick Q and A.
Who are The Boy Royals? We are a 4 piece band from Newport. We are Alex, Jamie, Hamish and Luke.
Why did you decide on the name change from Town? There was constant problems with potential fans finding us on search engines etc. So we’d been thinking about it for a while and pretty much decided we did it now or never. Our gut instinct told us to go for it and we haven’t looked back since!
What’s the single ‘People Like Us’ about? Â It’s about your every day person making the most of what they have. Everyone has their own individual problems, but we also have those little things in life that pick you up and make you think it’s all worth while.
Where was it recorded and who with? Â We recorded it at Longwave studios in Cardiff with Romesh Dodangoda. We’ve worked with him on our latest tracks and it’s great to go in the studio with someone who gets the same buzz off our tracks as we do.
What’s the best thing about coming from Wales? The best thing about coming from Wales is the fact that there’s always that sense of unity and support in all things Welsh. As long as you get up and give it your all, then you know your fellow countrymen will be backing you all the way. I think every Welshman has a sense of pride built in to their genes.
What are the future plans for The Boy Royals? For the time being we’re writing. Then after this single, there could be another one on the cards before the year is out, or even an EP if you’re lucky.
Well, fingers crossed we get lucky because we definitely need more songs from the band.
