Turmion Kätilöt – Global Warning Review

Release date: 17th April 2020

It’s always a treat to hear new music from the awesome Turmion Kätilöt, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting album number nine from them. (And I was also excited to see them at Nummirock, but coronavirus put paid to that.) Global Warning is another strong release from them and although it doesn’t quite hit the highs of some of their previous albums, it’s still highly enjoyable to listen to.

Opening strongly with Naitu, the song sets the scene well with a simplistic introduction before the band powers into an energetic and full sound, which remains in place for the rest of the song. The main melody/riff to the song is seriously catchy (since first acquainting myself with the album, I’ve found myself humming it to myself more times than I care to mention!) and it’s just an all-round fun sounding track – no doubt when we are all allowed to start going to gigs again, this is going to be one of their set staples.

Global Warning doesn’t quite manage to hit the heights of Naitu again, but it’s still a good album regardless. Fifth track Turvasana has a great dark vibe to it, and later track Syntisten laulu is a fast paced and to-the-point inclusion, but there are times where songs don’t quite stick in your mind and don’t pack a massive punch.

All in all, a great listen, and as soon as we are allowed to start going to shows again, I’d highly recommend checking them out live. They really do need to be seen live in order to be fully appreciated, and I for one can’t wait to see how these songs translate into a live environment!

7/10
