Verikalpa – Taistelutahto Review

Release date: 16th February 2018

Okay. If you’ve spoken to me over the past few weeks, you’ll probably already know about how much I bloody love this album. Taistelutahto may only the debut album from Finnish folk metallers Verikalpa but holy crap, it is absolutely something else.

Taistelutahto presents one incredible song after another – there are no weak links to be found here, and that’s something to behold in itself. Folk metal is somewhat of a tired, oversaturated genre with most bands doing the same thing but this feels like something different. There’s a familiarity to the music as it’s clear Verikalpa have brought in influences from numerous bands, but there’s also a clear uniqueness to their sound as a whole. Additionally, the sheer enthusiasm in each band members’ performances is commendable and makes you enjoy the music even more as a result.

It’s difficult to pinpoint definite highlights on the album because honestly, every one of the ten tracks are fantastic in their own unique way. Third track Neidonryöstäjä is made for dancing along to (I can already envision how fun this one will be live!), fifth track Pahan Laulu has a sheer epicness to it right from the get-go thanks to the atmospheric introduction, and the mighty closer Rautatammi rounds the album up nicely before you inevitably dive right back in and start listening again.

It’s only the start of 2018 but Taistelutahto could well wind up being my favourite album of this year. I have been completely blown away by this talented band and I just can’t get enough of them. 2018 is definitely the year of Verikalpa.

10/10
