Vyre – Weltformel Review

Release date: 20th April 2018

The third full-length album from German avant-garde/post-metal band Vyre, entitled Weltformel, is one of those albums you really have to mull over a few times before making up your mind. It’s a slow burner, that much is true, and is perhaps best described as being a more acquired listen – it takes a while to properly get into it.

The synths are one of the stronger elements of Vyre’s sound; they add a lot of atmosphere and flair to the music, and juxtapose nicely against some of the heavier facets of the music – in particular, the synth lines in second track Shadow Biosphere are fantastic and they also pair up awesomely with the string lines as well. Another highlight of the album is instrumental track The Hitch (We Are Not Small). It has a wonderfully haunting tone to it, and there’s a lot of colour to the instrumentation as a whole.

However, at times Weltformel does seem to drag a little. Third track Life Decoded takes a while to get going and doesn’t quite have the momentum needed to fully engage the listener, resulting in a somewhat disjointed-sounding track that is good in parts but doesn’t completely deliver.

Weltformel is a good album but it isn’t an easy listen – it definitely takes a while to fully get into, but nevertheless is still worth checking out.

6.5/10
