Windwaker – Hyperviolence Review

Release date: 12th July 2024

I always love it when I discover a really exciting album – and one that definitely ticks all the boxes is Hyperviolence, the latest offering from Australian metalcore outfit Windwaker. My first introduction to the band, Hyperviolence is their second full-length release, and to say it’s mighty is somewhat of an understatement.

Windwaker have absolutely mastered the art of writing catchy melodies and vocal lines, backing them up with mighty harsh vocals and heavier instrumentation when the occasion calls for it. As someone who loves a big sing-along chorus, Hyperviolence is right up my street and I’m honestly obsessed – this is an album I’ve been heavily listening to on repeat since it landed in my inbox. It’s so good I subsequently preordered it as well to have my own copy as well!

A personal highlight of the album for me is Vertigo, a song that opens with a seriously catchy hook that draws you in and maintains your interest the whole time. The blend of melody and aggression is sublime, and the chorus is such an earworm that you’ll soon find it rattling round your head after hearing it. Another great inclusion is earlier track Sirens – also featuring a massive chorus, can you see a pattern forming? – and Venom, which has more of a nu-metal vibe courtesy of the rapped vocals, is another strong offering.

Indeed, Windwaker clearly know what it takes to write an earworm or two, and they have their sound absolutely nailed. Hyperviolence is exciting, and really makes me eager for more from them.
