Behind The Scenes: Witterquick On Their Single Soldiers

Witterquick

Witterquick have recently released their new single Soldiers. We caught up with them to find out more about the song! Soldiers is also streaming below so give it a listen and let us know what you think of it!

What is the story behind Soldiers?
Soldiers is about conflict, how we’re all fighting something, whether it’s a relationship, a situation, or ourselves.

Can you describe the writing and recording process for the song?
Soldiers was a late addition actually. We had 5 solid tracks already selected for the EP when Soldiers showed up and bumped another one off. It’s sad having to lose that track from the record but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We were in our rehearsal studio running through the songs just before recording – and Will played through a new idea he’d been working on for the past couple of days. It gave us chills, like a buzz down the spine, like it was clear this was the one. We worked on the track as a band that night, and it quickly came to life. Every addition that was made lifted it to a new level. The song was written and recorded in less than a week! – it just had this energy that carried it.

In the studio, as each part was recorded down you could see this picture being unveiled, and it was bigger and better than we had imagined. Nate even improvised the entire solo live in to the desk! Out of the 5 tracks on the EP, Soldiers and Rise were two songs that really ignited the studio. You could feel something happening.

What made you choose Soldiers as a single?
Soldiers was the clear favourite for the lead single because it shows exactly who we are, it’s an affectionate punch to the gut. It has that huge catchy power chorus, it has the quirky guitar hooks. It has that energy, the vibe, and more than that – it’s different, and it’s new. Guitar music has an awful habit of painting by numbers. We’re here to break that.

Would you say it’s representative of your upcoming EP Beneath The Spinning Lights?
There are elements that run through the EP, but the songs aren’t all the same. We didn’t want to be that band that has one single and 4 filler tracks, or worse – 5 tracks that are all strangely familiar. These are 5 incredibly strong songs, each showing a different side of us, but all strongly linked. They each have this underlying magic, an energy that we can’t control. It’s just something inside the songs.

What can fans expect from Beneath The Spinning Lights?
We’ve got a lot of people really getting behind what we’re doing already, and with the other 4 tracks still to be revealed you can certainly expect something special.

And what’s in store for the rest of the year for you?
The rest of the year for us is busy, but incredibly exciting. We’ll be taking Soldiers on the road from October – with a single release party at the Exeter Cavern on October 28th. We can’t talk too much about the rest yet, but you can expect to hear a lot more from us very very soon.
